This book mainly deals with the concept of meaning which has a significant role in communication and interaction. Since meaning is studied under semantics and pragmatics, the major differences between these two disciplines are given in terms of semantic meaning and pragmatic meaning. Therefore, in the first place, context has been explained and the distinctions between a sentence and an utterance and a presupposition and an entailment have been provided. Then, in the subsequent chapters, the cooperative principle and the conversational maxims which the interlocutors are expected to abide by are explained as these are thought to be vital for a communication to flow smoothly. In the meantime, the distinction between what is implied and what is inferred has been elaborated. Thus, it is thought that the book will help people in clarifying the concepts of implicatures and inferences in order to prevent misunderstandings that may arise during a communication.
